Melmayil Village, Vellore.

Gayathridevi Panchalingam lives in Chennai, but has roots in Melmayil village (Vellore District, Tamil Nadu). Inspired by the My Gaon project, she visited her native village to understand the problems the residents are facing. She noticed that the lavatory of the primary school was in very poor condition as a result of which the children were suffering. She mobilized resources from her family and friends, and with the help of her father, she completely renovated the lavatories. A video of the Headmaster of the school expressing her immense gratitude can be seen here:

Gayathri is now looking into the next project she should take up in her village. Although she works full time with an IT company in Chennai, she is eager to dedicate her free time towards addressing the challenges in her village, one challenge at a time. Her grandfather had built a hospital in the village many years ago, but it has been lying unused since. Gayathri is now trying to find a way in which she can make the hospital functional. If you have any ideas you would like to share with her, get in touch with her on gayathridevi.panchalingam@listertechnologies.com

Kattur Ramanathapuram Village, Trichy

Aravind B. is a native of Trichy. Through the My Gaon project, he found a village in Trichy Distrct which required some support - Kattur Ramanathapuram village. An NGO partner of the My Gaon project – Vidyarambam Trust – was willing to conduct their Head Start programme in this village in order to support the education of the children. The Head Start programme is an intense English tutorial which provides a great boost to the children’s ability to communicate in English, at the modest cost of Rs 200 per child.

Aravind mobilized Rs 28,500/- with the help of family, friends and colleagues and donated this amount to Vidyarambam Trust. Now, the organization is going to use this amount to conduct the Head Start programme for 140 children in this village.

Watch the children in this village express their desire to learn English:

Coming soon is a video on how Vidyarambam’s Head Start programme benefitted them.
